What's Happening?
The Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana (PM-VBRY) has successfully integrated over 72 lakh first-time employees into India's formal workforce within its first year of implementation. Launched in August 2025, the scheme aims to bolster social security
and incentivize job creation by linking employment with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) registration and direct benefit transfers. The initiative has seen significant participation from women, who constitute nearly 30% of the beneficiaries. Additionally, over 15 lakh beneficiaries have already received employment-linked incentives. The program is designed to formalize the labor market and enhance job security, with a focus on labor-intensive manufacturing sectors. It operates under a two-part incentive framework, offering financial incentives to both employees and employers to encourage sustained employment.
Why It's Important?
The PM-VBRY is a critical initiative for India's economic landscape, as it addresses the need for formal employment and social security in a predominantly informal labor market. By integrating a large number of workers into the formal sector, the scheme not only enhances job security but also contributes to a more organized and efficient labor market. This transition is crucial for economic stability and growth, as it ensures a steady talent pool for industries and reduces the vulnerability of workers. The scheme's focus on women and young people further supports inclusive growth, promoting gender equality and youth employment. For employers, the financial incentives reduce hiring costs, encouraging them to create and sustain jobs, which is vital for economic expansion and industrial development.
What's Next?
The PM-VBRY is set to continue until July 2027, with a target to generate employment for over 3.5 crore people, including 1.92 crore first-time employees. As the scheme progresses, it is expected to further strengthen the formal labor market and expand social security coverage. The government will likely monitor the program's impact on employment rates and economic growth, making adjustments as necessary to maximize its effectiveness. Stakeholders, including policymakers and industry leaders, will be keenly observing the scheme's outcomes to assess its contribution to India's broader economic objectives.
