What's Happening?
Artissima, Italy's only fair dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, concluded its 32nd edition in Turin, reinforcing its role as a hub for research-led work and international collecting. Directed by Luigi Fassi, the fair ran from October 30 to November
2, 2025, at the Oval Lingotto Fiere, attracting 34,500 visitors and featuring 176 galleries from 36 countries. The event emphasized experimentation and discovery, with 63 monographic presentations and a significant presence of international collectors and curators. The fair's theme, 'Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth,' inspired by Buckminster Fuller's 1969 book, encouraged galleries to explore themes of responsibility and stewardship. Artissima also introduced the Vilnius Residency Prize, awarding one-month residencies to selected artists. The Fondazione Arte CRT Acquisition Fund marked its 25th anniversary by acquiring 26 works for local museums, further integrating the fair's market activities with Turin's public collections.
Why It's Important?
Artissima's growth and international appeal underscore its significance in the global art market, particularly as a platform for contemporary art. The fair's ability to attract a diverse range of galleries and visitors highlights Turin's emerging status as a cultural hub. The introduction of new prizes and the expansion of acquisition funds demonstrate a commitment to supporting artists and integrating contemporary art into public collections. This not only enhances the cultural landscape of Turin but also positions Italy as a competitive player in the European art economy. The fair's focus on themes of responsibility and stewardship reflects broader societal concerns, encouraging dialogue and innovation within the art community.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Artissima's continued emphasis on international collaboration and support for emerging artists suggests a sustained trajectory of growth and influence. The fair's integration with local institutions and its role in shaping public collections may inspire similar models in other regions. As Italy adjusts to a new 5 percent VAT rate on art, the fair could serve as a testing ground for policy impacts on the art market. The success of Artissima may encourage further investment in cultural initiatives, reinforcing Turin's position as a key player in the global art scene.
