What's Happening?
Labcorp has announced a collaboration with the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology to conduct a national, multicenter clinical trial aimed at improving genetic testing for colorectal cancer (CRC). The trial will focus on increasing germline genetic testing among
at-risk family members and evaluating the impact of multigene panel testing on newly diagnosed patients. Labcorp will serve as the exclusive genetic testing provider, leveraging its Invitae testing capabilities. The trial is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and involves participation from the NCI National Clinical Trials Network, including sites in Puerto Rico. The study aims to improve the participation of first-degree relatives in genetic testing through proactive outreach by healthcare providers.
Why It's Important?
This trial is significant as it addresses the gap in genetic testing among at-risk relatives of colorectal cancer patients, which is crucial for cancer prevention and management. Inherited genetic variants account for about 10% of all CRC cases, yet less than a third of at-risk relatives undergo recommended testing. By enhancing genetic testing outreach and participation, the trial could lead to better identification of hereditary cancer syndromes, such as Lynch syndrome, and improve patient outcomes. The findings could influence how genetic testing results are communicated and utilized in clinical practice, potentially shaping future healthcare policies and practices.
What's Next?
The trial will enroll patients and their relatives nationwide, with results expected to provide insights into effective strategies for increasing genetic testing participation. The outcomes could lead to changes in how healthcare providers approach genetic risk communication and testing, potentially influencing guidelines and standards in cancer care. The collaboration reflects Labcorp's commitment to advancing genetics-based approaches and supporting high-impact clinical research.
