Michigan officials have initiated an urgent plan to rescue Great Lakes whitefish populations, which are facing near-collapse due to an invasion of zebra and quagga mussels. The state has allocated $350,000
from its budget, supplemented by nearly $900,000 from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust, to fund this 'genetic rescue' mission. Scientists from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians will collect spawning whitefish from Lake Michigan this fall, from Naubinway to Saugatuck. The collected fish will be bred in captivity, with their eggs incubated at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. The goal is to preserve the most endangered genetic stocks of whitefish, as wild populations in some areas of Lakes Michigan and Huron have seen almost no hatchling survival for two decades. Commercial whitefish harvests have drastically declined, from 6.9 million pounds in 2009 to less than 2 million pounds last year, indicating the severity of the crisis.
