What's Happening?
Tennessee Tech University's Department of Computer Science has received nearly $175,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of a multi-year, multi-institutional project. This grant aims
to integrate concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and parallel and distributed computing into foundational computer science courses. The project, led by Sushil Prasad, Ph.D., of the University of Texas at San Antonio, also includes Knox College, the University of Massachusetts, Louisiana State University, and the University of Maryland. Tennessee Tech will serve as one of two development teams responsible for creating and testing these new educational materials. Additionally, the university will train approximately 200 instructors from diverse institutions across the country on how to implement these advanced computing concepts in their classrooms, preparing students for the evolving technology workforce.

What's Next?
Tennessee Tech's team, including computer science senior lecturer April Crockett (principal investigator), Department of Computer Science Chair Gerald Gannod, Ph.D., and lecturer Travis Brummett (co-principal investigators), will proceed with developing and testing the new AI, big data, and parallel and distributed computing materials for early core computer science courses. Following the development phase, they will host workshops and tutorials to train instructors from approximately 60 diverse institutions on how to effectively use these new materials. Concurrently, Tennessee Tech, which recently welcomed its first AI majors, will continue to expand opportunities for students to prepare for the evolving workforce, further solidifying its position as a leader in AI education in Tennessee.
