What's Happening?
Bowdoin College is actively advancing artificial intelligence (AI) research and ethical guidance through its $50 million Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity. This initiative, funded by Bowdoin alumnus and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, aims to
explore, understand, and ethically guide the transformative power of AI. Key priorities include hiring ten new faculty members across various academic disciplines, funding faculty research, and supporting teaching and artistic projects involving AI. The initiative has also made AI more accessible to students, expanding opportunities for direct engagement with developing technologies. In recent months, funding has become more available, and the College introduced the Hastings Summer Fellowship, which saw an inaugural cohort of five students studying AI under faculty mentorship. Students are undertaking innovative projects, ranging from an anti-procrastination app to software for preserving personal memories, and are critically examining the morality, capabilities, and limitations of AI.
