A US expeditioner was successfully rescued from Antarctica in a challenging mid-winter operation conducted by an Australian aviation team. The mission began on July 28, following an urgent request for medical evacuation from the US McMurdo Antarctic research
station. After a weather delay, the rescue team, flying an Airbus A319 named Snowbird 1, landed in complete darkness and extreme cold conditions. The patient was safely transferred to the aircraft and flown to Christchurch, New Zealand, for treatment.
