What's Happening?
The US State Department has authorized a potential $90 million Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Iraq, aimed at extending logistical support for passenger vehicle scanning systems used by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency
(DSCA) has notified Congress of this proposed agreement, which focuses on maintaining and supporting VACIS XPL scanning equipment at Iraq's borders. The Iraqi government has requested a two-year extension of contracted logistical services, which includes maintenance, spare parts, software updates, and remote monitoring. Leidos has been named as the principal contractor for this project. The DSCA has emphasized that the sale will not alter the military balance in the region and will not require additional US personnel in Iraq.
Why It's Important?
This sale is significant as it aligns with US foreign policy objectives by enhancing the security capabilities of a key partner in the Middle East. By supporting Iraq's ability to address security threats, the US aims to contribute to regional stability and economic development. The deal also reflects ongoing US efforts to maintain strategic partnerships in the region, which are crucial for countering terrorism and other security challenges. For Iraq, the continued support will help in securing its borders against threats such as weapons smuggling and contraband, thereby strengthening its internal security infrastructure.
