What's Happening?
Newly inducted human resource professionals in Nigeria have been urged to actively prepare the nation's workforce for the challenges and opportunities presented by automation and emerging technologies. This call to action was made by Mallam Ahmed Gobir, President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, during the 66th Induction Ceremony held in Lagos. Gobir emphasized the need for HR professionals to transcend traditional administrative roles and become strategic stewards capable of shaping organizations and influencing national development. The ceremony inducted six distinguished professionals as Full Members and welcomed 77 as Associate Members of the Institute. Gobir highlighted the critical role these professionals will play in addressing Nigeria's workforce needs, especially in light of projections by the World Economic Forum that by 2030, 92 million jobs will be displaced by automation, but 170 million new roles will be created globally.
Why It's Important?
The emphasis on preparing for automation is crucial as it aligns with global trends where technology is rapidly transforming job markets. For Nigeria, a country with a large and youthful population, the ability to adapt to these changes is vital for economic growth and stability. HR professionals are positioned to lead this transformation by equipping the workforce with necessary skills and fostering environments that embrace technological advancements. This shift not only impacts individual career trajectories but also has broader implications for national productivity and competitiveness. By focusing on strategic HR practices, Nigeria can better navigate the transition to a more automated economy, potentially reducing unemployment and enhancing the quality of jobs available.
What's Next?
The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria plans to continue supporting HR professionals through initiatives like the upcoming CIPM International Conference and Exhibition, scheduled for October 27-30, 2025, in Abuja. The conference, themed 'Reimagining the New World of Work', will explore emerging trends, workforce transformation, and the future of human resource management in Africa. This event will provide a platform for HR professionals to exchange ideas, learn from global best practices, and develop strategies to effectively manage the transition to an automated workforce.
