What's Happening?
NASA has issued a waiver allowing grantees attending the 57th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) in March 2026 to be reimbursed for lodging costs that exceed the General Services Administration (GSA) approved rate. The conference, scheduled
to take place at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, has a GSA-allowed daily lodging expense of $128 for the area. However, due to higher actual hotel rates, NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) grants can cover up to $276 per night plus taxes and fees. This decision is intended to accommodate the higher lodging costs associated with the conference venue, ensuring that attendees can stay at the host hotel without financial strain. The waiver applies to NASA grantees and may also extend to those traveling on NASA contracts, subject to communication with their contracting officers.
Why It's Important?
This waiver is significant as it addresses the financial challenges faced by researchers and scientists attending important conferences. By allowing reimbursement for higher lodging costs, NASA ensures that its grantees can participate in the LPSC without being deterred by financial constraints. This move supports the dissemination and exchange of scientific knowledge, which is crucial for advancing research in lunar and planetary sciences. It also highlights NASA's commitment to facilitating scientific collaboration and innovation by removing barriers that could hinder participation in key scientific events.
What's Next?
Attendees of the LPSC will need to coordinate with their respective institutions to ensure compliance with travel policies, as the waiver does not override more restrictive institutional policies. NASA grantees and contract travelers should confirm their eligibility for the waiver and plan their accommodations accordingly. The conference is expected to foster significant scientific discussions and collaborations, contributing to the broader goals of NASA's research and exploration missions.
