What's Happening?
Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit founded by Jesuit priest Father Greg Boyle, has acquired the Monastery of the Angels in the Hollywood Hills to convert it into a treatment facility. The historic site, previously home to cloistered Dominican nuns, will
be transformed into a 60-bed community named Home of the Angels. This facility will provide beds for substance abuse treatment and mental health support, addressing the needs of formerly incarcerated and gang-involved individuals. The initiative aims to keep individuals within the Homeboy network for comprehensive support, enhancing their chances of successful rehabilitation. The project is supported by the California Department of Health Care Services and will include outpatient services, educational programs, and wellness activities.
Why It's Important?
The conversion of the Monastery of the Angels into a treatment facility by Homeboy Industries represents a significant step in addressing the complex needs of individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. By providing a dedicated space for rehabilitation, Homeboy Industries is expanding its capacity to support vulnerable populations, particularly those with a history of incarceration and gang involvement. This initiative not only offers a safe and supportive environment for recovery but also aligns with broader efforts to reduce recidivism and promote community reintegration. The project underscores the importance of comprehensive care and community-based solutions in tackling social issues, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across the country.
What's Next?
Homeboy Industries plans to open the Home of the Angels facility by the end of next year. The organization will maintain the site's historic architecture while introducing new programs and services. Community engagement will be a key focus, with plans to allow public access to the chapel and continue the sale of the monastery's renowned pumpkin bread and candy. The facility will be staffed around the clock to ensure safety and effective management. As the project progresses, Homeboy Industries will work closely with local partners and stakeholders to ensure the facility meets the needs of its residents and the surrounding community.
