What's Happening?
The Sharara Podcast, which aims to highlight the role of science and innovation in conflict-affected regions, has received new funding from The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). This support will enable the production of three
additional seasons, totaling 45 episodes, through 2027. The podcast, launched by SciDev.Net, part of CABI, focuses on amplifying the voices of scientists, innovators, and journalists working under extreme conditions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The podcast has been praised for fostering knowledge exchange and bridging humanitarian and development actors, with episodes covering topics such as solar irrigation and health innovations in war zones.
Why It's Important?
The Sharara Podcast plays a crucial role in maintaining scientific discourse and innovation in regions where conflict often disrupts research and development. By providing a platform for local voices and solutions, the podcast helps ensure that decisions affecting vulnerable communities are based on reliable, evidence-based insights. This initiative not only supports the dissemination of critical knowledge but also encourages cross-border collaboration, as seen in the adoption of Yemeni solar power techniques by Syrian farmers. The podcast's success in reaching over one million listeners demonstrates a significant demand for such content, highlighting the importance of science communication in crisis settings.
What's Next?
With the new funding, Sharara aims to increase its listenership by 20% annually and expand its reach through partnerships with major broadcasters. The podcast plans to train and mentor journalists in conflict-affected areas of MENA in podcast production and storytelling, further enhancing its impact. By engaging a wide audience, Sharara seeks to foster trust in science and innovation, acting as a bridge between stakeholders and providing accessible insights into science-driven solutions for communities in crisis.
