What's Happening?
Adriana Figueroa, an animal lover in the United States, intervened to save a senior dog from being euthanized at a local shelter. The incident occurred around Thanksgiving when Figueroa noticed an older
woman attempting to surrender her dog due to eviction. Initially, the woman claimed she was looking for someone to take the dog, but it was later revealed she intended to euthanize him. Figueroa, along with her friend Yenie, managed to convince the woman to allow them to find a rescue for the dog, now named Coquito. Despite being diagnosed with a cancerous mass, Coquito is currently in hospice care, living with a foster family who provides him with love and comfort.
Why It's Important?
This story underscores the challenges faced by senior dogs in shelters, particularly during times of human crisis. Senior dogs are often overlooked in favor of younger animals, with only about 25% being adopted compared to 60% of younger dogs. The intervention by Figueroa and the support from Paw Patrol Animal Rescue highlight the importance of advocacy and compassion for older pets. The case of Coquito serves as a reminder of the need for more resources and awareness to ensure that senior dogs receive the care and dignity they deserve in their final years.
