Currently, nearly 40% of ship crews in Malaysia are composed of foreign nationals, underscoring the urgent need for qualified local seafarers. Loke emphasized the importance of filling these vacancies with local talent, noting the bright prospects and high earning potential in the maritime field. Despite these opportunities, interest in seafaring careers remains low in Malaysia compared to countries like the Philippines and Indonesia. To address this, Loke called for increased awareness campaigns, workshops, and community programs to engage young people and their parents. He also noted the rising number of female cadets at the Malaysian Maritime Academy (Alam) as a positive trend, although they still represent only about 10% of the student body.
