Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, has released findings from a ten-month study on the use of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT-4 in cybersecurity operations. Conducted in partnership with eSentire, the study involved 45 analysts across Security Operations Centres in Ireland and Canada, who submitted over 3,000 queries to ChatGPT-4. The research highlighted that analysts primarily used AI for routine tasks such as interpreting technical alerts and editing reports, while reserving critical decision-making for themselves. Only four percent of queries sought direct recommendations, indicating a preference for evidence and context to support human decision-making. The study, part of CSIRO's Collaborative Intelligence program, suggests that human-AI collaboration can enhance productivity, trust, and wellbeing in high-pressure environments.
