What's Happening?
Türkiye has commenced its first overseas deepwater drilling operation with the Curad-1 well offshore Somalia. The ultra-deepwater drillship Çağrı Bey is drilling in water depths of about 3,500 meters, aiming to reach a total depth of 7,500 meters. This
marks a significant expansion of Türkiye's offshore capabilities, following a seismic campaign that identified a promising drilling target. The project represents a strategic move to enhance Türkiye's international exploration and production activities, particularly in underexplored regions like East Africa.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Türkiye's first overseas deepwater drilling project signifies a major step in the country's efforts to expand its energy exploration and production footprint. The operation could unlock new hydrocarbon resources in Somalia's largely untapped offshore sector, potentially attracting further investment and development. This initiative reflects the growing competition among national oil companies to secure new exploration opportunities and diversify energy supplies amid global energy transitions. Successful drilling could lead to increased interest in East Africa's offshore potential, benefiting both Türkiye and the region.
