What's Happening?
Sasha Galitzki, a filmmaker and aerial acrobat, is bringing her documentaries to Revelstoke to raise awareness about wildfires and climate change. After losing her home in the 2024 Jasper wildfire, Galitzki created two films, Wild Aerial and Embers, which
explore the impact of extreme weather and wildfires. These films have been showcased internationally and have won awards for their compelling narratives. Galitzki's work aims to inspire action on climate issues and will be featured in a local screening event that includes a community discussion on wildfire preparedness.
Why It's Important?
Galitzki's documentaries serve as a powerful tool for educating the public about the realities of climate change and the increasing threat of wildfires. By bringing these films to Revelstoke, she is fostering a community dialogue on environmental resilience and preparedness. This initiative is particularly timely as regions like Revelstoke face early-season wildfire activity. The films not only highlight the personal and environmental impacts of wildfires but also encourage proactive measures to mitigate future risks, aligning with broader efforts to address climate change at local and national levels.
What's Next?
The upcoming screening event in Revelstoke will feature a panel discussion with local experts, including the Fire Chief and environmental advocates. This event aims to equip attendees with practical skills for wildfire emergencies and foster a deeper understanding of climate issues. Following the Revelstoke screening, Galitzki plans to continue her outreach efforts, with screenings scheduled in other communities affected by wildfires. Her work will also be part of an exhibit at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, further amplifying the message of climate action and awareness.
