What's Happening?
The Grumman X-29 was an experimental aircraft developed during the Cold War, notable for its forward-swept wings. This design offered improved low-speed handling and maneuverability but posed significant engineering challenges due to aeroelastic divergence.
The aircraft was made viable through the use of graphite-epoxy composites and advanced fly-by-wire technology, allowing it to maintain stability despite its inherent instability. Funded by DARPA, the U.S. Air Force, and NASA, the X-29 conducted 422 research missions from 1984 to 1992, proving the feasibility of its design.
