What's Happening?
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) has welcomed new legislation that streamlines permitting for tourism operators in protected areas. The reform introduces a single-permission framework for operators working in national parks and protected areas,
reducing administrative burdens and allowing businesses to focus on delivering exceptional visitor experiences. QTIC CEO Natassia Wheeler stated that the current permitting system was overly complex and a barrier to growth. The reform aims to cut red tape and ensure strong environmental protections remain in place. The legislation is a response to feedback from operators across the state, demonstrating that industry voices are being heard. Roderic Rees, director of Cairns Adventure Group, expressed support for the legislation, highlighting its potential to foster sustainable growth and innovation within the sector.
Why It's Important?
The reform is significant for Queensland's tourism industry, particularly for nature-based and ecotourism experiences, which are among the state's greatest strengths. By simplifying the permitting process, the legislation provides greater certainty for operators and supports sustainable growth. This change is expected to enhance Queensland's competitiveness as a leading destination for visitors, fostering innovation and resilience within the sector. The streamlined process allows operators to spend more time creating world-class experiences, contributing to a more competitive and innovative visitor economy. The collaboration between operators, government, and peak bodies toward a shared goal demonstrates the potential for positive industry-government partnerships.
What's Next?
Tourism Minister Andrew Powell stated that QTIC will continue working closely with the government to support the implementation of the new system. The focus will be on ensuring the system is fit for purpose, user-friendly, and delivers real benefits for tourism businesses statewide. The ongoing collaboration aims to maintain Queensland's position as a leading destination for visitors while fostering sustainable growth and innovation within the sector.
