What's Happening?
Dompé, a biopharmaceutical company, has dosed the first patient in a Phase 3 study of cenegermin-bkbj for treating persistent corneal epithelial defect (PCED), a rare eye condition. The trial, named 'Orunea,' will enroll 150 adult patients to evaluate
the efficacy of cenegermin-bkbj, a recombinant human Nerve Growth Factor, in achieving complete epithelial healing of the cornea. PCED affects fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. and represents a significant unmet clinical need due to limited treatment options.
Why It's Important?
The initiation of this Phase 3 study is a critical step in addressing the high unmet need for effective treatments for PCED, a condition that can lead to severe complications if untreated. Dompé's research into cenegermin-bkbj could potentially offer a new therapeutic option for patients suffering from this debilitating condition. The study also highlights the broader potential of Nerve Growth Factor in treating various corneal diseases, reflecting Dompé's commitment to advancing ophthalmic care and improving patient outcomes.
