What's Happening?
Still Here, a new magazine, is dedicated to amplifying the voices and experiences of Black women affected by HIV and AIDS. The publication seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black women in the HIV/AIDS narrative, providing a platform for their
stories through essays, interviews, and cultural criticism. The magazine is produced by WACO Theater Center with support from Gilead Sciences, Inc., and aims to challenge the stigma surrounding HIV while highlighting the unique challenges faced by Black women.
Why It's Important?
The magazine's focus on Black women is crucial as they are disproportionately affected by HIV, yet their stories are often overlooked in mainstream media. By bringing these narratives to the forefront, Still Here seeks to foster greater understanding and empathy, potentially influencing public perception and policy. This initiative also highlights the ongoing need for targeted healthcare and support services for Black women, who continue to face higher rates of HIV infection compared to other demographics.
What's Next?
Still Here plans to expand its reach through live experiences and interactive exhibits, aiming to engage communities and spark conversations about HIV and its impact on Black women. The magazine's efforts could inspire similar initiatives and collaborations, encouraging more inclusive storytelling in media. As awareness grows, there may be increased advocacy for better healthcare access and resources for those affected by HIV, particularly within marginalized communities.
