What's Happening?
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster is on a collision course with the moon, expected to impact at a speed of 5,400 mph. The booster, which has been in orbit since January 2025, is anticipated to create a crater 65 to 100 feet in diameter and about 16 feet deep.
This event marks a rare instance of a man-made object colliding with the lunar surface. The impact is expected to occur on the moon's lit side, making it challenging to observe directly. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will capture before and after images to study the impact's effects.
