What's Happening?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the creation of 55 new missions globally, effective July 1, 2026. This expansion is in response to the increasing number of young members choosing to serve full-time missions. The new missions will
bring the total number to 506 worldwide, accommodating the growing number of missionaries and supporting the increasing number of congregations. President Dallin H. Oaks expressed inspiration at the commitment of young church members to share the gospel, noting the positive impact on hundreds of thousands of lives annually.
Why It's Important?
The announcement reflects a significant growth in missionary participation within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, countering national trends of declining religious affiliation among younger generations. The increase in missions is expected to enhance the church's ability to support its global congregations and facilitate the spread of its teachings. This expansion may also influence religious dynamics in regions where new missions are established, potentially increasing the church's influence and membership.
What's Next?
The church will implement the new missions by adjusting existing mission boundaries. This strategic move aims to balance the number of missionaries in each mission, allowing leaders to better support and mentor them. The church anticipates continued growth in missionary numbers, which could lead to further expansions in the future. Stakeholders, including church leaders and members, are likely to monitor the impact of these new missions on local communities and congregations.
