What's Happening?
Henry Ford Health is now offering a new surgical implant called Genio for individuals suffering from moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who cannot tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. Jody DeLavern, a patient who struggled
with CPAP, received the Genio device through a 2.5-inch incision under her chin. The device, approved by the FDA approximately a year ago, functions by stimulating nerves in the neck that control the tongue and throat muscles. This stimulation helps keep the airway open during sleep, preventing collapse. Unlike some other implanted devices, the Genio's battery is external, powered by a disposable patch worn under the chin each night, eliminating the need for future surgeries to replace internal batteries. Doctors can also externally adjust the stimulation settings as a patient's needs evolve. The treatment is specifically for patients meeting certain criteria, including a diagnosis of moderate to severe sleep apnea and documented intolerance to CPAP.

This new implant offers a significant alternative for the substantial portion of sleep apnea patients, estimated between 30-60%, who find CPAP therapy difficult to tolerate due to issues like mask discomfort, pressure intolerance, or claustrophobia.
