What's Happening?
WineGB has introduced a new Hiring Toolkit to assist UK vineyards and wineries in recruiting and retaining staff, as the industry experiences significant growth. The toolkit, launched during National Inclusion Week, is the third in a series of guidance documents aimed at promoting best practices within the sector. It includes templates, checklists, policies, staff retention tips, and case studies on hiring and inclusion. The resource is particularly beneficial for smaller producers who may lack HR teams or the time to develop such resources. Nicola Bates, CEO of WineGB, emphasized the importance of the toolkit in managing the additional workload created by recruitment, especially during the harvest season when many wineries are employing extra staff.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Hiring Toolkit is crucial as the UK wine industry has seen a substantial increase in employment, with full-time equivalent roles rising by over 40% since 2023. The sector now employs 3,300 full-time roles, with recruitment in hospitality showing the largest growth. Seasonal temporary positions have also increased significantly. The toolkit supports the industry's expansion and addresses the challenges of recruitment during a period of rapid growth. WineGB's initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in the wine sector, which is expected to continue expanding its workforce in the coming years.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, WineGB's Industry Survey indicates that 90% of respondents plan to expand their workforce by 2028, with a projected 21% rise in full-time equivalent roles. By 2040, the industry could employ around 30,000 people. WineGB is also extending its SWGB certification program to include standards on people, following the release of its Safeguarding and Welfare Toolkit and Sustainable Packaging Toolkit. These efforts are part of WineGB's commitment to supporting the industry's growth and ensuring sustainable practices.
