What's Happening?
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council has approved a lease agreement with Edelen Renewables to develop a solar farm on the Haley Pike landfill. The project will cover 123 acres of capped landfill and 234 acres of surrounding agricultural land. The council's
decision came after delays due to financial concerns and potential displacement of the Lexington Model Airplane Club. The club, which operates near the landfill, fears losing its FAA-recognized site, crucial for flying drones and remote-controlled aircraft. Despite these concerns, the council voted 10-3 in favor of the lease, driven by the need to start construction by mid-June to qualify for federal tax credits. These credits are set to expire in July, making timely approval critical for the project's viability.
Why It's Important?
The approval of the solar farm lease is significant for Lexington's push towards renewable energy and addressing climate challenges. The project positions Lexington as a leader in green energy, potentially lowering energy costs for low-income households through a community benefits agreement. However, the decision also highlights the tension between renewable energy development and existing community interests, such as the model airplane club. The club's potential displacement raises concerns about the loss of educational and recreational opportunities. Balancing these interests is crucial as cities increasingly turn to renewable energy projects to meet environmental goals.
What's Next?
Edelen Renewables will now seek financing for the solar project, with hopes that the city bond and community benefits agreement will be approved before the council's July recess. The model airplane club's lease ends in April, and discussions are ongoing to extend it temporarily while seeking a new location. The outcome of these negotiations will determine the club's future and its ability to continue operations. The council's decision to tie the community benefits agreement to the city's industrial revenue bond suggests ongoing discussions about maximizing community advantages from the solar project.
