PG&E is in the early stages of developing a plan to decommission its Battle Creek Hydroelectric Project, a facility that has been operational for nearly 50 years. The utility decided in 2020 to cease ownership and operation of the project due to increasing
operational costs and a lack of interested buyers after seeking new owners in 2021. The project encompasses two upstream storage reservoirs, three forebays, 20 canals and pipelines, 15 diversion dams, two fish screens and ladders, and five powerhouses. PG&E spokesperson Paul Moreno stated that an initial license surrender application and proposed decommissioning plan are expected to be completed in 2027. This plan will then be released for public review, followed by revisions based on public input, before a final application is submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
