What's Happening?
Gabriela León-Pérez, a sociology professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), is recognized for her efforts to connect academic research with community needs. Originally from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, León-Pérez moved to the U.S. in 2008 and has since
focused on projects that highlight the experiences of Latino immigrants. Her work includes the Latino Virginia Oral History project, which documents the diverse stories of Latino immigrants in Virginia. Additionally, she co-founded the Alliance for Latino Youth Mental Health and Advocacy (ALMA) to address mental health challenges faced by Latino youth in Richmond. These initiatives aim to provide real-world solutions and improve the well-being of the Latino community.

This will provide a platform for sharing the diverse stories of Latino immigrants, furthering public understanding and engagement. ALMA plans to release a bilingual mental health services directory for the Greater Richmond Area, offering a vital resource for Latino youth and their families. These initiatives are expected to continue fostering collaboration between academic institutions, community organizations, and local government, enhancing support for the Latino community in Richmond.
