A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that just 20 minutes of exercise can significantly improve cognitive function and memory recall after a night of insufficient sleep. The research involved 54 young
adults who were kept awake for 30 hours. They were then divided into three groups: one performed 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous cycling, another took a 90-minute nap, and the third sat on a stationary bike without pedaling. Both the exercise group and the nap group showed nearly identical improvements in memory recall, remembering significantly more images than the control group. While napping reduced fatigue and sleep pressure, exercise boosted brainpower by increasing oxygen flow to the brain and regulating serotonin levels, according to Dr. Praveen Rudraraju, director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Northwell’s Northern Westchester Hospital.
