A recent study has found a significant increase in opioid overdose deaths in rural Appalachian counties following severe floods. The research, conducted by Mengjun Ge, Zhen Lei, and Kristina P. Brant, analyzed data from 2000 to 2017 and concluded that
severe floods, defined as those receiving a presidential disaster declaration and causing at least one fatality, were associated with a 26% higher annual overdose death rate in affected counties for up to 10 years post-flood. This translates to an estimated 1,368 additional opioid overdose deaths linked to severe floods in rural Appalachia during the study period. The study highlights how natural disasters disrupt support systems for individuals in recovery and create immense stress, leading some to relapse or initiate drug use.
