What's Happening?
The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) has chosen Fast Enterprises, LLC and its GenTax solution to modernize the state's tax administration system. This decision follows a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. GenTax is a widely adopted
integrated solution, currently used by 35 other U.S. state revenue agencies for their tax system modernizations. The NCDOR anticipates that this initiative will bring several benefits to North Carolina citizens, including enhanced customer service through a new taxpayer portal, improved processing efficiencies via expanded electronic services, and increased agility in responding to legislative changes. Secretary of Revenue McKinley Wooten stated that the new system will transform how the department interacts with taxpayers and the legislature. This modernization effort is a multi-year project, with updates and estimated timelines to be shared on the NCDOR website as work with Fast Enterprises progresses.
Why It's Important?
This modernization is important for North Carolina as it aims to streamline and improve the efficiency of tax administration, directly impacting taxpayers and the state's financial operations. By adopting a proven system like GenTax, NCDOR seeks to enhance the user experience, making tax-related processes more accessible and less cumbersome for citizens. The move towards greater electronic services and a taxpayer portal signifies a shift towards more digital governance, which can lead to faster processing times and reduced administrative burdens. Furthermore, the ability to respond more agilely to legislative changes is crucial for maintaining an up-to-date and compliant tax system, ensuring that new laws are implemented effectively. This investment in technology reflects a broader trend among state governments to leverage modern solutions for critical public services, potentially setting a standard for other departments within North Carolina and other states looking to upgrade their infrastructure.
What's Next?
The NCDOR will now accelerate its work on implementing the GenTax system with Fast Enterprises. This multi-year initiative will involve significant collaboration between the NCDOR and the vendor to integrate the new solution into the state's existing infrastructure. As the project advances, the NCDOR plans to provide regular updates, including estimated timelines, on its website. This transparency will keep taxpayers and stakeholders informed about the progress and anticipated rollout of the new system. The successful implementation is expected to lead to a more efficient and user-friendly tax administration, potentially influencing future technological adoptions within other state agencies. The NCDOR's focus will be on ensuring a smooth transition and maximizing the benefits of the new system for all North Carolina citizens.
