Born in Detroit, Michigan, Coggin graduated from Dartmouth College and the Amos Tuck School of Business. His career spanned various roles, including positions at W.R. Grace, Polaroid, and B.F. Perkins, eventually becoming General Manager of Williams Manufacturing. Coggin was deeply involved in sailing, participating in the 1967 Finn Olympic trials, and was an active member of the Glencoe Union Church and Skokie Country Club. He was known for his problem-solving skills, starting a support group for job loss and advocating for safety measures at The Mather of Evanston.
