What's Happening?
Chromologics, a Danish biotech company, has raised €7 million to further develop its fermentation-based natural food colours. The funding, led by Novo Holdings and EIFO, will support regulatory submissions
to the European Food Safety Authority and the US FDA for its product Natu.Red®. Chromologics aims to launch its first product and scale production with a large-scale CMO partner. The company has conducted trials with over 90 food manufacturers, demonstrating the product's performance and application potential.
Why It's Important?
The investment in Chromologics reflects a growing demand for sustainable and natural food colourants, driven by bans on synthetic alternatives. Chromologics' technology offers a scalable and cost-effective solution, aligning with the green transition in the food industry. The development of fermentation-derived colours addresses environmental concerns by reducing land and water use compared to traditional methods. This advancement supports the industry's shift towards more sustainable practices and meets consumer demand for natural ingredients.
What's Next?
Chromologics plans to complete regulatory submissions and launch Natu.Red® in the market. The company is positioned to lead the transition towards natural food colours, with strong investor backing and a clear regulatory roadmap. As the demand for sustainable ingredients grows, Chromologics may expand its product offerings and collaborate with food manufacturers to integrate its technology into various applications. The successful launch of Natu.Red® could pave the way for further innovations in the food colour industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The shift towards natural food colours highlights broader ethical and environmental considerations in the food industry. As consumers become more conscious of ingredient sourcing and sustainability, companies must navigate the balance between innovation and ethical practices. Chromologics' approach to biomanufacturing represents a commitment to responsible production, setting a precedent for other companies in the sector.
