Arbor Energy, a company founded by former SpaceX engineers, has announced a significant shift in its power plant technology. Originally designed to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by burning
plant waste, the power plant will now also burn natural gas. This change comes as Arbor Energy raised $55 million in Series A funding led by Lowercarbon Capital and Voyager Ventures. The decision to incorporate natural gas is driven by the increasing electricity demand from data centers, which the existing biomass-only design could not fully meet. Arbor Energy's power plant uses oxy-combustion technology, which transforms hydrocarbons into syngas and burns it in the presence of pure oxygen, resulting in CO2 that is easily sequestered. The company plans to continue capturing CO2 for sequestration, leveraging tax credits that make storage cheaper than atmospheric release.

Under this agreement, Arbor Energy is tasked with removing 116,000 tons of CO2 by 2030. The company aims to achieve a climate impact of less than 100 grams of CO2 per kilowatt of electricity generated.
