The West Contra Costa Emergency Radio Group (WCCERG) is expanding its network of amateur ham radio operators to improve emergency communication capabilities in Richmond and surrounding areas. Formed in 2018,
the group aims to provide reliable communication during disasters that disrupt power and cell phone services. The group has grown to include operators in El Cerrito, Kensington, and other communities, with plans to recruit more from Pinole, Hercules, and Rodeo. Members, including Jay and Karen Fenton, emphasize the importance of being prepared for emergencies, highlighting the role of ham radios in maintaining communication when conventional systems fail. The group collaborates with the Richmond Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to train residents in emergency response skills.
