What's Happening?
The government of Dominica has engaged Leve Global Limited, a Trinidad-based consulting firm, to develop a Sustainability Plan and Strategic Framework for the island's agro-processing facility. This initiative aims to retain more financial benefits within
the local economy by enhancing the processing and marketing of locally grown produce. Historically, Dominica's farmers have produced high-quality crops, but much of it has been sold raw or lost due to limited processing capabilities. The new plan focuses on building systems to process, package, and sell more locally grown products, such as spices, sauces, and value-added flours. Root crops like dasheen and cassava will be central to production due to their local abundance and potential for processed products. Leve Global will map the agro-food system and design a business model to ensure the facility's efficiency and market reach.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it addresses a critical gap in Dominica's agricultural sector—value capture. By enhancing agro-processing capabilities, the initiative aims to increase farmers' income, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy. Agriculture accounts for about 15% of Dominica's economy, yet many farmers do not earn the full value of their produce. The project seeks to transform local produce into market-ready products, thereby generating steady income and enabling competition in regional and export markets. This move is particularly timely as global supply chains face uncertainties and food costs rise, prompting Dominica to bolster its economic resilience by leveraging its natural agricultural strengths.
What's Next?
Leve Global has already conducted stakeholder consultations involving government, private sector, farmers, agro-processors, and development partners. These discussions explored opportunities for intra-regional trade, export expansion, and innovation in agro-processing. The next steps will likely involve implementing the strategic framework and business model designed by Leve Global, with a focus on operationalizing the agro-processing facility. This will include setting up the necessary infrastructure and systems to process and market local produce effectively. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other Caribbean nations looking to enhance their agricultural sectors.
