What's Happening?
The First Group Hospitality and MIDROC Investment Group have entered into a master agreement to develop and operate ten new hotel properties across Ethiopia. This agreement was formalized at the Future Hospitality Summit Africa in Nairobi. The planned
hotels will include both independent and Marriott-branded franchises, located in cities such as Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Jimma, Langano, and Danbi. The development is expected to deliver approximately 1,140 keys, with hotel openings phased between 2026 and 2031. This partnership aligns with The First Group Hospitality's strategy to expand its management platform in Africa and supports MIDROC Investment Group's growth in the hospitality sector.
Why It's Important?
This development marks a significant expansion in Ethiopia's hospitality industry, potentially boosting tourism and creating numerous job opportunities. The collaboration between The First Group and MIDROC Investment Group could enhance the country's infrastructure and attract more international visitors, contributing to economic growth. The introduction of Marriott-branded hotels may also elevate the standard of hospitality services in Ethiopia, aligning with global expectations. This expansion could position Ethiopia as a more competitive destination in the African tourism market.
What's Next?
The phased openings of these hotels between 2026 and 2031 will likely involve significant construction and development activities, requiring collaboration with local contractors and suppliers. The success of this venture could encourage further investments in Ethiopia's hospitality sector. Stakeholders, including local governments and tourism boards, may need to prepare for increased tourist inflow and the associated economic activities. Additionally, the partnership may inspire other international hospitality brands to explore opportunities in Ethiopia.
