What's Happening?
WUWM is implementing significant changes to its programming schedule starting November 29, aiming to increase locally produced content and introduce more joyful and light-hearted shows. The changes are based on audience research indicating a desire for
more local news and entertaining content. WUWM will increase its local content from 5% to 12% of its weekly broadcast, restoring the Lake Effect program to a full week and adding Wisconsin Today in partnership with Wisconsin Public Radio. Additionally, new shows like Classic Eats and This Old House Radio Hour will be introduced to the weekend lineup. These changes mean the removal of several popular programs, including Freakonomics and Planet Money, which will continue as podcasts.
Why It's Important?
The programming changes at WUWM reflect a broader trend in public radio to cater to local audiences and provide content that resonates with community interests. By increasing local content, WUWM aims to strengthen its connection with southeastern Wisconsin listeners, offering more relevant news and stories. The introduction of joyful and light programming addresses audience demand for entertainment and positive experiences, potentially attracting new listeners and enhancing community engagement. These changes could influence other public radio stations to reevaluate their programming strategies to better serve local communities and adapt to evolving listener preferences.
What's Next?
WUWM will monitor audience feedback and engagement following the programming changes to assess their impact. The station may continue to adjust its schedule based on listener responses and emerging trends in public radio. As the new programs gain traction, WUWM could explore further partnerships and content development opportunities to expand its reach and influence. The success of these changes may encourage other stations to adopt similar strategies, fostering innovation and diversity in public radio programming.
