Recent research utilizing optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating has revealed that Neanderthals occupied Mujina Cave in Dalmatia, Croatia, approximately 80,000 years ago. This discovery pushes back the timeline of Neanderthal presence in the eastern
Adriatic by 30,000 years. Mujina Cave, a systematically excavated site, contains Mousterian stone tools and animal remains, indicating repeated Neanderthal occupation. The Mousterian stone tool industries, associated with Neanderthals, are characterized by sophisticated knapping techniques used for various purposes such as hunting and woodworking. Previous dating methods placed the site's occupation between 49,000 and 39,000 years ago, but the new OSL dating of deeper layers has provided older ages, aligning with other Middle Palaeolithic sites in the Adriatic region.
