What's Happening?
The city of Arcata has been awarded $597,000 by the California Coastal Conservancy to fund a study for the restoration and climate change adaptation of Jolly Giant Creek. This creek, though only four miles long, plays a crucial role in funneling runoff
to Humboldt Bay, with a significant portion running underground through culverts within the city. During heavy rains, especially when coinciding with king tides, the creek can flood, impacting nearby homes. The funding will support the initial phase of a larger project, focusing on studying the creek's hydrology and hydraulics to understand its movement and identify areas needing intervention. Representative Jared Huffman and Assemblymember Chris Rogers advocated for Arcata, emphasizing the creek's importance in letters to the conservancy. The project aims to prepare the creek and Butcher Slough for larger water volumes, potentially involving 'daylighting' subterranean sections and rerouting parts of the creek away from residential areas.
