What's Happening?
A significant road construction project is set to begin on May 1 in Cherry Valley, Illinois, as part of a $25.5 million initiative to widen U.S. 20 from four to six lanes between the Interstate 39 interchange and just east of the Kishwaukee River. This
project, which includes replacing bridges, upgrading traffic signals, and realigning a service road, is part of a larger $302.4 million reconstruction of the I-39 corridor in Rockford and Cherry Valley. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck over the next six years under Governor JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into transportation infrastructure. During construction, only one lane will be open on U.S. 20, with multiple lane shifts expected. The project is anticipated to be completed by June 2028.
Why It's Important?
This road project is a critical component of Illinois' broader infrastructure improvement strategy under the Rebuild Illinois capital program. By expanding U.S. 20 and enhancing the I-39 corridor, the state aims to improve traffic flow and safety, reduce congestion, and support economic growth in the region. The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate local economies by improving access to businesses and facilitating smoother transportation of goods. However, the construction will also pose challenges for local drivers, who will face lane closures and shifts, potentially leading to increased travel times and disruptions. The long-term benefits of improved infrastructure are expected to outweigh these temporary inconveniences.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, drivers in Cherry Valley and surrounding areas will need to adapt to changing traffic patterns and remain vigilant in construction zones. IDOT will continue to provide updates and guidance to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions. The completion of the project in 2028 will mark a significant milestone in Illinois' infrastructure development, potentially setting a precedent for future projects under the Rebuild Illinois program. Stakeholders, including local businesses and residents, will likely monitor the project's impact on traffic and economic activity closely.
