What's Happening?
The Mayor-President's office in Baton Rouge has initiated the Youth Workforce Experience program aimed at providing high school students in East Baton Rouge Parish with practical work experience. The program, which kicked off with an onboarding event
at Glen Oaks Magnet High, involves 100 high school students who will be employed in various roles across businesses such as law firms, non-profit organizations, and offices. Participants will earn $10 per hour and can work up to 30 hours per week from June 1 to July 31. Dr. Yolanda Burnette Lankford, the chief service officer at the mayor's office, emphasized that the program is designed to open doors for students to explore potential career paths and gain valuable work experience. Upon completion, students will be certified as 'work-ready youth.'
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it provides young individuals with early exposure to the workforce, equipping them with essential skills and experience that can enhance their future employability. By engaging with various sectors, students can better understand different career options and make informed decisions about their professional paths. The program also addresses the need for youth employment opportunities, which can contribute to reducing unemployment rates among young people and fostering economic growth in the community. Additionally, businesses participating in the program benefit from fresh perspectives and the opportunity to mentor the next generation of workers.
What's Next?
As the program progresses, participating students will gain hands-on experience and develop skills that are crucial for their future careers. The success of this initiative could lead to its expansion, potentially involving more students and businesses in the coming years. Stakeholders, including local businesses and educational institutions, may collaborate further to enhance the program's offerings and impact. The certification of students as 'work-ready youth' could also encourage other regions to adopt similar programs, promoting youth employment and skill development on a broader scale.
