What's Happening?
Twenty-nine students from The Ohio State University participated in the inaugural 'Around the World with Disney Imagineering' global education program. This four-week summer course allowed students from 15 different disciplines, including engineering
and architecture, to explore collaborative creation processes used in Disney parks. The program, a first for Ohio State's Office of International Affairs to combine domestic and international travel, included visits to Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney. Students engaged in behind-the-scenes tours, Q&A sessions with Disney Imagineers, and met with Ohio State alumni working at Disney. Coursework involved designing a new park attraction, writing individual response papers on how their academic careers fit into Imagineering, and maintaining a travel journal. The program aims to demonstrate how diverse skills contribute to complex, multidisciplinary projects, using Disney Imagineering as a model for large-scale creative collaboration. Future plans include trips to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando and Disneyland Paris in summer 2027.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant as it provides a unique experiential learning opportunity for U.S. university students, bridging academic theory with real-world application in a highly creative and complex industry. By exposing students from various fields to the interdisciplinary nature of projects like Disney theme parks, it fosters a broader understanding of how engineering, design, storytelling, technology, art, and business converge. This approach can inspire students to pursue careers that require collaborative problem-solving and innovative thinking, potentially shaping the next generation of professionals in entertainment, technology, and design sectors. The involvement of alumni also strengthens professional networks and provides students with tangible career paths, demonstrating the value of their diverse academic backgrounds in a global context. This initiative could serve as a model for other educational institutions seeking to offer immersive, cross-disciplinary learning experiences.
What's Next?
The 'Around the World with Disney Imagineering' program is scheduled to continue in summer 2027, with planned trips to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando and Disneyland Paris. Student applications for the 2027 program are due by January 7, 2027. The ongoing success of this program could lead to its expansion, potentially including more students, additional destinations, or the development of similar interdisciplinary programs focusing on other major industries. The university may also seek to further integrate alumni networks into these educational initiatives, leveraging their expertise and connections to enhance student learning and career development. Continued evaluation of student outcomes and industry feedback will likely inform future iterations and potential growth of this unique educational model.
Beyond the Headlines
This program highlights a growing trend in higher education towards experiential and interdisciplinary learning, moving beyond traditional classroom settings to provide students with practical skills and broader perspectives. The collaboration with a global entertainment giant like Disney underscores the increasing demand for professionals who can integrate diverse fields of knowledge to create immersive experiences. Ethically, it promotes a holistic view of project development, where technical skills are balanced with creative and narrative elements. Legally, such programs may involve complex international travel logistics and intellectual property considerations related to student projects. Culturally, it exposes students to different operational environments and creative philosophies, fostering a more globalized understanding of their respective fields. This initiative could also influence long-term shifts in curriculum design, encouraging universities to develop more programs that blend STEM with arts and humanities to prepare students for an evolving job market that values versatility and innovation.
