What's Happening?
Kevin Johnson, through his National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB2), has partnered with Colin Kaepernick for the book tour of Kaepernick's memoir, '#ThePerilousFight'. This collaboration focuses on centering the tour events at Black-owned bookstores
across the U.S. The NAB2 team identifies 306 Black-owned bookstores, with 90% generating less than $250,000 annually. The strategy aims to direct significant revenue to these establishments through sold-out events. Kaepernick's memoir launch included sold-out events at the Brooklyn Public Library, featuring a conversation with Nikole Hannah-Jones, and at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, where Malcolm X's daughter Attallah Shabazz introduced him. Kaepernick, who grew up as a Black child adopted into a white family, recorded the audiobook in his own voice, sharing his personal journey and the reasons behind his 2016 decision to take a knee.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important for several reasons, primarily its economic impact on Black-owned businesses and its cultural significance. By intentionally directing Kaepernick's book tour to Black-owned bookstores, Kevin Johnson's NAB2 is providing a crucial financial boost to a segment of the retail industry that often struggles with revenue. This support helps sustain these cultural hubs, which are vital for promoting Black authors and narratives within their communities. Furthermore, the partnership amplifies the message of Kaepernick's memoir, which addresses themes of identity, courage, and social justice. The choice to center the tour in these specific venues reinforces the book's themes and ensures that its message reaches and resonates with communities that have historically championed Black voices and stories. This collaboration also highlights the power of strategic partnerships in fostering economic empowerment and cultural preservation.
What's Next?
The immediate next step involves the continuation of Colin Kaepernick's book tour, with a sustained focus on Black-owned bookstores as primary venues. This model could potentially inspire other prominent authors and publishers to adopt similar strategies, further benefiting these independent bookstores. Beyond the tour, the success of this partnership might encourage increased investment and support for the NAB2 and its mission to bolster Black-owned literary establishments. There could also be a broader conversation within the publishing industry about equitable distribution and promotion strategies for diverse authors and their works. The visibility generated by Kaepernick's tour could also lead to more readers discovering and supporting these bookstores, fostering long-term growth and community engagement.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Kevin Johnson's NAB2 and Colin Kaepernick extends beyond mere book sales; it represents a powerful statement on cultural ownership and economic justice. By prioritizing Black-owned bookstores, the initiative challenges traditional publishing and retail models that often overlook or marginalize these businesses. It underscores the idea that supporting these establishments is not just about commerce, but about preserving spaces that are integral to Black intellectual and cultural life. This move also highlights Kaepernick's continued commitment to social activism, using his platform to create tangible economic opportunities for communities he champions. The initiative could serve as a blueprint for how public figures can leverage their influence to create direct, positive impacts on specific community-based enterprises, fostering a more equitable and representative cultural landscape.
