What's Happening?
In Tennessee, 4-H members Cole Burchell and Ben Jackson are highlighting the significant role of mentorship within the agriculture industry. Burchell, serving as the All-Star Deputy Chief, shared his experiences with RFD News, emphasizing the meaningful
relationships and communication skills he developed through 4-H. Despite not having a family background in 4-H, Burchell found a supportive community within the organization. Jackson, whose mother was a 4-H agent, initially resisted joining but now appreciates the influence it has had on his life. He currently serves as the Western Region Junior Representative. Both members encourage others to join 4-H, underscoring its community service goals.
Why It's Important?
The emphasis on mentorship in 4-H is crucial for the development of future leaders in agriculture. By fostering skills such as teamwork, communication, and volunteerism, 4-H prepares young individuals for significant roles in the agricultural sector. This is particularly important as the industry faces challenges such as climate change, technological advancements, and a need for sustainable practices. Programs like 4-H help bridge the gap between traditional agricultural practices and modern innovations, ensuring that the next generation is well-equipped to handle future challenges. The personal growth and community service aspects also contribute to building resilient and socially responsible individuals.
