What's Happening?
Utah Valley University (UVU) is utilizing artificial intelligence to support student success, particularly for first-generation college students. The university has implemented AI tools to provide 24/7 assistance, helping students navigate academic processes
and unfamiliar terminology. This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate AI into the curriculum and support students in various disciplines. UVU has received a donation from the Kahlert Foundation to expand its Applied AI Institute, which focuses on embedding AI into courses and hiring faculty to assist students in using AI tools effectively.
Why It's Important?
UVU's use of AI in education is a significant development in higher education, as it addresses the challenges faced by first-generation students and those with additional responsibilities. By providing continuous support, AI tools can help reduce barriers to education and improve student outcomes. This initiative also reflects a growing trend in higher education to incorporate technology into learning environments, preparing students for a workforce increasingly reliant on digital skills. The focus on applied AI ensures that students not only learn about AI but also gain practical experience in using it.
