What's Happening?
BAE Systems has significantly expedited the development of a low-cost anti-drone capability for the Royal Air Force's (RAF) Eurofighter Typhoon. Originally projected to take 18 months, the integration of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS)
guided rockets was completed in just 42 days. This rapid development was in response to the urgent need to counter Iranian Shahed drones, which have been used to target Middle Eastern allies amid recent conflicts involving Israel and the U.S. The APKWS provides a cost-effective alternative to the more expensive MBDA Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (Asraam) previously used by the RAF. The new system was demonstrated by the RAF's 41 Test and Evaluation squadron and has since been deployed to the Middle East.
