A study has found microplastics in all 17 human artery samples examined, raising concerns about their potential impact on cardiovascular health. The research, published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, discovered microplastics in coronary, carotid,
and aortic arteries, with higher concentrations in arteries with fatty plaques. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), commonly used in water bottles and food packaging, was the most prevalent plastic type. The study suggests that microplastics may contribute to oxidative stress, cellular damage, and immune-inflammatory responses, potentially linking them to atherosclerosis and increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
