Spanish investigators are examining an incident involving a near-collision between a Boeing 787-9 and an Airbus A321XLR. The two aircraft were traveling head-on at the same cruise altitude of 36,000 feet on airway N857, a bidirectional route in the Canaries
airspace. The incident occurred in darkness on July 10, between the waypoints ETIBA and BIPET, approximately 70 nautical miles off the Western Sahara coastline. The collision was averted by the aircrafts' automated collision-avoidance systems, which prompted the A321XLR to descend by 500 feet and the 787 to climb by 400 feet. No injuries were reported among the 454 passengers and 18 crew members on board the two jets.
