What's Happening?
A comprehensive oral health assessment is being conducted as part of a prospective birth cohort study in Amsterdam. This study, known as the Oral Health Study (OHS), is a subcohort of the Amsterdam Infant Microbiome Study (AIMS), which itself is part of the larger
Sarphati Cohort. The Sarphati Cohort, initiated in 2018, aims to study the development and health of children in Amsterdam, focusing on lifestyle and environmental factors. The OHS specifically examines oral health data from toddlers and their mothers, integrating this with other health parameters collected in associated studies. The study involves clinical oral examinations of both children and mothers, assessing various oral health indicators such as dental plaque, caries, and periodontal health. The research protocol has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Amsterdam Medical Centre, and data collection began in October 2022.
